The archives of the New York Times are full of references to society members that regularly summered along the beautiful shores of Lake
Champlain in Westport, New York. Many of the grand old homes are still well-maintained to this day by descendants of the original owners. A typical
article published July 2, 1911, reports "W. E. Oglivie, President of the Havana Central Railroad, is at Westport with his family and is
occupying Bonnycroft Cottage. Mr. Oglivie has his large naphtha launch and an automobile here for trips by water and land."
The main house was originally part of an 80 acre farm. The Oxford University Press defines croft as "a private field, usually with adjacent cottages". The current owner's research revealed that around 1919 the main house was named "Bonnycroft", which is consistent with the slightly earlier reference from the NY Times. Being offered for sale is a 2± acre parcel containing the 4525± square foot main house, a separate 1470± square foot building that formerly contained a veterinary clinic and a moderate size out building that easily stores a lawn tractor and various garden supplies. The main house features a large wrap around porch from which views of the lake and the Green Mountains of Vermont can be enjoyed during the warmer months. For most of the past forty years, the current owner raised a large family which was supported by her late husband's very successful veterinary practice. More recently, once the family was grown, the large home was run as a Bed and Breakfast. The front portion of the house contains 5 of the 8 bedrooms and all but 2 of the 6½ baths. That, along with the large formal dining room and more than 600 square foot living room, make this an excellent setup for anyone that might want to once again operate it as a B & B. Westport is a safe, friendly community with one of the finest public schools in the area. The house is located just 5 miles from Exit 31 on Route 87, The Northway. Westport is about half way between Albany to the south and Montreal to the north, less than a 2 hour drive. Many people have also discovered that it is possible to work in the Burlington, Vermont area and live in one of the communities on the New York side of the Champlain Valley. Westport is just 12 miles from the Essex to Charlotte Ferry, which runs the entire year. High speed internet service through local DSL, as well as cable, make staying in touch with your office and clients easy. The former veterinary clinic could serve as a satellite office, allowing more time with your family, while enjoying a beautiful home that is far more affordable than an equivalent Vermont property.
Westport is also home to one the finest 18 hole championship golf courses in the Adirondack Park, the If you are considering living year round or just looking for a place to spend your summers, Bonnycroft should be on your shortlist of places to consider. Westport, New York $558,600 |
