Evergreen, situated on 6.5± acres, is a 5 bedroom, 2 bath home dramatically sited near a series of small waterfalls on Walton Brook at the edge of the village of Keene, NY. It is within easy walking distance of State land. It has a cozy kitchen/dining/sitting area, as well as a fabulous 20’ x 37’ Great Room and a very large screened porch.
The Great Room has many attractive features including a big fieldstone fireplace, a large bay window overlooking a quiet and private meadow encircled by trees and accessed by an exterior door nearby, tall ceilings, glistening hardwood floors and walls of natural wood. Another bay window features the falls on Walton Brook. A second exterior door leads to a covered porch with views of Walton Brook. This connects the Great Room and the Screened porch. This area has mahogany floors and a peaked ceiling and can be used comfortable during three seasons of the year, thanks to the optional use of Plexiglas inserts which can be installed inside of the screens.
The screened porch also provides access to the dining/sitting/kitchen area. This is an informal and cozy area with natural wood walls and an attractive fieldstone fireplace. The living/dining area is open to the kitchen, which has good lighting, contemporary appliances and ample cupboard and counter space.
Upstairs are three bedrooms, a full bath and a large storage area all reached from a spacious but compact central hallway. The bedroom at the top of the stairs has wonderful views of Walton Brook. It has an adjoining bath. Another large room across the hall can accommodate a single and a queen bed. The smallest bedroom is a sweet little room under the eaves. It has a peaked ceiling and a lovely stained glass window at the highest point. A storage room is under the eaves at the opposite end of the home. It mirrors the smallest bedroom and has plenty of room for storage. It has numerous other possible uses as well; a walk-in closet, a reading room, a den or even another bath.
An unusual convenience of the house is that there are suitable “master” bedrooms on both the first and second floors. The downstairs bedroom with adjoining bath has traditionally been used as the master, but the large upstairs bedroom with views of Walton Brook is also a good option.
This home is a haven of privacy, situated at the edge of the village, not far from State “forever wild land”. It has a lovely secluded setting with the brook and beautiful mountain views.
Water for the home comes from a driven well, but there is also a natural spring which was used as a water source at an earlier time. An oversized full basement/garage beneath the home houses utilities, washer and dryer and also has space for one car. Down the hill from the house is a second garage which also accommodates two cars.
Evergreen is reached from the village over a very pretty town maintained country road which winds along the banks of the AuSable River. Shortly after it leaves the river corridor and heads toward state land is Evergreen’s driveway which is long enough to hide the house from the road, but short enough for relatively easy care. There is paving near the house and parking for several cars.
Both Keene and Keene Valley offer good dining, libraries, various interesting shops and many opportunities for recreation. There are miles and miles of trails which can be enjoyed by both the serious hiker and those who prefer a gentle afternoon meander. The AuSable River which runs through both villages is a resource for fishing, swimming and picnicking. The Adirondack Trail Improvement Society provides a wonderful hiking program for children and Keene Valley has a swimming and tennis club enjoyed by many in the community during the summer months. Lake Placid’s Olympic facilities are only 25 minutes away and Lake Champlain and the ferries to Vermont is about a 40 minute drive.
